Hiking Red Rock Canyon

A great hiking spot near Las Vegas

When people think of Las Vegas they think of casinos, shows and nightlife. The Las Vegas area also has some great hiking nearby. Just 17 miles west of the Las Vegas strip you’ll find the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area.


The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area lies in Nevada’s Mojave Desert. It has towering red sandstone peaks, beautiful panoramic views and Native American petroglyphs. There are numerous hiking trails to enjoy. We’ve listed a few of our favorites below.


Calico Tanks Trail

Level: Moderate Length: 2.2 Miles Elevation 406 Ft

This trail features beautiful sandstone formations, a hidden water pocket and a nice view of Las Vegas.


Turtlehead Peak Trail

Level: Hard Length: 4.6 Miles Elevation 1988 Ft

On this trail you’ll walk past petroglyphs to the ridge line with one of the best panoramic views of Red Rock Canyon.


Ice Box Canyon Trail

Level Moderate Length 2.3 Miles Elevation 577Ft

This trail will take you though a cool, shady box canyon with seasonal waterfalls (December thru April).


Calico Hills Trail

Level: Hard Length 6.4 Miles Elevation: 1108 Ft

The Calico Hills are the park’s signature feature. This trail runs along the front side of the red stone ridge and takes you into fantastic scenery, onto the rocks with beautiful scenery. There is also a shorter version of this trail for those looking for a shorter less strenuous hike.


These are just a few of the many hikes that the Red Rock Convservation area has available. There are hikes for all levels. The next time your in Las Vegas plan some time away from the strip to enjoy Nevada's natual beauty.
